I was really inspired to make this felt pom pom garland after I bought a Christmas Felt Garland that was made with giant felt balls. It was so pretty I’m changing up my Christmas decorating color scheme.

Let me show you how easy it is. But make sure you follow my tip below for tying the end knot, it makes it so easy.

As I mentioned, this will be a pretty fast project. Faster yet if you choose to leave more space between your felt balls than I did. You can easily make this felt ball garland while watching TV.

You can sort your felt balls into colors and go all in the same order. Or you can go wild and get all willy nilly when adding them. All I did for mine was try to keep an even balance of bright and dark.

How to Make DIY Felt Ball Garland

Step 1: Gather your supplies

For this Felt pom pom garland you’ll need:

  • 77 15 mm Wool Felt Balls
  • 75 10 mm Olive Wood Beads
  • 8′ length of Hemp cord or embroidery floss
  • Doll Needle

If you want to make yours longer adjust the above supplies as needed.

Step 2: Cut your cord to the desired length

  • Unloop the length of yarn, Embroidery Floss or Hemp Cord for the length of Garland you’re making.
  • Add an extra 2 feet to create loops at the end for hanging.
  • If using embroidery floss don’t separate the strands.

Step 3: Thread the doll making needle

  • Thread your yarn, embroidery floss or hemp cord through the doll needle with a tail about 1′ long.
  • No need to knot the end, nothing will slide off.

Step 4: Begin assembly of the Felt Ball Garland

  • Starting with a Wool Felt Ball, poke the needle through the center of the felt ball.
  • Alternate felt balls with the olive wood beads.
  • Push them down onto your hemp cord or embroidery floss leaving that extra foot at the end.
  • Continue until you’ve added all the felt balls and wooden beads.

Step 5: Secure the ends of your Felt Ball Garlands

You can secure the ends of your felt ball garland a few different ways.

  • Tie off close to the end of the last felt ball. To do that:
    • Make a largish, lose knot in the cord close to the felt ball.
    • Slip the needle through the big loop of the knot (shown below in the fuzzy pic).
    • Holding the loose end slowly move the needle toward the felt ball to move the knot close to the ball.
    • When you get the knot against the ball pull on the lose end to tighten knot around the needle.
    • Slip the needle out of the knot and tug to tighten.
    • Make a looped slip knot where you want the loop for hanging.
    • Trim excess cord.
  • Fold the remaining cord in half and tie a simple slip knot in the cord directly next to the felt ball. Trim excess cord.
